IRVINGTON HOUSING AUTHORITY

A BRIEF HISTORY

The Housing Authority of the Township of Irvington (IHA) was originally incorporated in 1949, in order to develop, maintain, manage and provide decent, safe, affordable rental housing for eligible, low-income senior and family tenant households.

The IHA site was named “Camptown Gardens”, in honor of William Camp, one of the original settlers of the nearby city of Newark, NJ, whose family owned the land along the Elizabeth River in Irvington (then Camptown) in 1750, upon part of which IHA was subsequently developed, much later.

The site consists of 670 rental units, as well as administrative offices and resident facilities, located on a city block, in fourteen low–rise and high-rise buildings. IHA also administers more than 600 Section 8 Vouchers, including portables.

  Mr. Brown's Welcome Statement :

Many of us do not embrace Black History Month for whatever the reason.  Let's try to focus on our history and heritage.  Look at where God has brought all of us and then start to reflect.  For me, it's very easy when I look at the blessings and where I've come from.  I look at growing up in public housing, not having many of the opportunities that my kids now have.  HOWEVER, I did and still do have plenty of opportunities to achieve.  I'm not sure what I was supposed to be exposed to in order for me to be compassionate about those less fortunate or senior, as well as the poor, but I do know my experiences growing up and having to share with my siblings helped.  Then going to Norfolk State, becoming Student Government President, joining Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, being President of NAACP, active in my church, and a community activist, all brought me to where I am today.  So, when I look back at my own history, what I've done and how many lives I have effected, I want to learn more about how this ties into my African American heritage.  If you think that knowing your history is not related to how things are today, look at the high rate of gang violence, teen pregnancy, drug abuse in our communities, then ask yourself one question.  Would the current situation be the same, if we knew the history of those who came before us?  I believe it makes a difference.  Make a difference in someone's life today.  Let's celebrate our heritage!

I remain.

As we begin this New Year, I hope and pray that all of you   have  had a joyous holiday season. As war continues all   around   us, my goal remains the same, peaces on earth and   good   will  towards all mankind.

I am reminded of a quote by Tavis Smiley in his book titled   “Keep the Faith” where he states and I quote, “We become the   hope of their dreams and the purpose for which many of them   gave their lives”.

So, I ask you to never give up hope on the people that we   serve, and let us all work together as one to better serve them .

God Bless and again, please accept my thanks and appreciation  for all that you do.
